The workshop Uniform, Härnosand and Sundsvall in June 2007: Lena Flodman and Johan Tirén, artist, was commissioned to set up a workshop for four different workplaces in Västernorrland. It was a study for different projects coming up in the county in 2009. Groups of personnel would get a first hand experience of what it might be like when artists come to workplaces to work together with them to implement various projects. The workplaces in the municipality were education, elderly care , child and adolescent psychiatric in Sundsvall and prison carers in Härnösand. The workshop contained issues like prejudice, dress codes and uniforms. What message are we sending out with the clothes? How quickly do we categorize people based on these codes? Is it possible to use these effects for a particular purpose , positive / negative? We had three hours available for each group. We had brought with us a mountain of old used clothes, a sewingmachine and several scissors. Both of us made entrance in a suit and tie. Lena slightly gender crossing with high-heeled shoes and fishnet stockings to tie . We introduced ourselves as artists and gave the group an initial task. We asked them to think individually and write down on a piece of paper some of the prejudices that they know that people generally has on them as profession. We discussed the task until a common picture of the group was clear. Then they had to sew a costume/uniform that somehow is exaggerating/ neutralize this prejudice. They cut in old clothes. They had a lively discussion what it looks like on their specific workplace and how they are perceived by their clients/students. One person sewed on the sewing machine. We brought the conversation forward. The picture is the back of a deck of words. The words were given to each participant pull from the pile and then analyze facing the others what personal associations with the word they could have. The words were for example male, weak ,culture and confidence. Sometimes entirely relevant words for their business, sometimes completely irrelevant . We had that part of the workshop to move the focus back to the individual. The workshop ended with one of the participants tested the sewn uniform.
